Body confidence tips from a plus-size model

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, but sometimes we can struggle to realise this, especially on those days when we lack in self-confidence. That’s why we’ve compiled advice from some of the worlds most well-known plus size models so that you can start to feel yourself again.

Your body shape does not equate to how healthy you are

Many people don’t realise this, but the shape or size that we are doesn’t necessarily define how healthy we are. A study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that BMI (body mass index) is not an accurate way to determine a person’s health. Toccara Jones, an alum of the TV show America’s Next Top Model, is a plus-size model who has highlighted that plus-size doesn’t necessarily mean overweight, fat or unattractive. After the show, she went on to achieve a fourteen page spread in Vogue Italia, so if she isn’t proof that plus means beautiful, we don’t know what is.

Banish negative thinking

Negative thinking can have a huge impact on our lives, especially for those of us who struggle to maintain a self-confident image. Christina Mendez has achieved an impressive career in TV and fashion, not only because she’s a beauty but because she sticks to her own advice. She says, “I advise girls and women to eliminate the word ‘fat’ from their vocabulary. That’s an important step towards a positive body image”, adding, “positive mind = positive body.” We can’t help but agree.

You should always prioritise confidence

Banishing negative thinking is the first step to making confident thinking a priority. The model Kate Dillon Levin has a lot to say about this – “I firmly believe that what makes you sexy and beautiful is not the size of your body or the colour lipstick you have on,” she explains. “What really makes you sexy is what you project: your confidence and your self-awareness.” While it’s true that everyone has those ‘off days,’ it’s important not to be your own worst enemy because the only person who’s going to stop you from achieving your goals is yourself.

Choose your role models wisely

A lot of people can have a negative impact on your thinking, so it’s important that you choose who and who not to listen to. Model Ali Tate said it well when she explained: “true beauty comes from the soul; to change yourself and to conform to anyone else’s standards of beauty is to change your essence; own who you are you become a truly powerful woman.” Ignore hateful criticisms and don’t let other people’s doubts slow you down. Be your own role model, your own head cheerleader and don’t change for anyone.

Above all else, we’re sure that all plus size models agree that it’s important to love who you are. If you don’t accept yourself, you’re never going to reach 100% happiness. Luckily, there are sites out there such as Ashleigh Plus Size that can help you feel confident with their range of stylish clothes specifically tailored to fuller figures.
